Tanja graduated from the University for Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria with an MA in Stage Design (First Class Honours). She subsequently completed a Graduate Diploma in Animateuring/Performance Making at The Victorian College of the Arts, and has worked extensively over the last twelve years as a designer, director, performance maker, and teacher in Australia and oversees.
Tanja's work includes over 40 designs for theatre companies and festivals in Australia and overseas. Tanja has designed set and costumes for Melbourne Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre Company, Sydney Opera House, World Theatre Festival, 2001 Melbourne International Arts Festival, Melbourne Museum, NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts), Expressions Dance Company, Circa, Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts, Vulcana Women's Circus, Kite Children's Theatre, State Library of Queensland, Queensland Arts Council, Real TV, The Gold Coast Arts Centre, Backbone Youth Arts and Contact Inc, Westside Circus, La Mama Theatre, The Torch Project, The Geelong Youth Arts Centre, Platform Youth Arts, as well as direction for the 2007 Melbourne International Arts Festival, La Mama, The Store Room and St Martins Theatre of Youth.
The show, At First Sight (NICA) was nominated for a Helpmann Award for Best Visual or Physical Theatre Production 2009.
Tanja has also designed for exhibitions at The Melbourne Museum and is a teaching artist with The Arts Centre and the Malthouse Theatre. She recently completed an Artist in Schools project (funded by Arts Victoria) at Kyneton Sacred Heart School and lectures at RMIT University.
A recent 2011 Asia-link Performing Arts recipient, Tanja will travel to Japan this year to complete her residency at The Centre for the Study of World Civilisations, Tokyo Institute of Technology. During her residency, Tanja will explore a pressing issue for the performing arts: sustainable approaches to theatrical design, and their potential to inform new design aesthetics. Specifically, Tanja will collaborate with Tokyo's engineering and artistic communities to investigate the use of recycled materials and found objects in performance spaces. Upon return, Tanja will begin her PhD candidature on the paradigm and practise of ecological design in the Performing Arts (UniMelb).
