RANDOM
World Theatre Festival 2011

Real TV in association with Brisbane Powerhouse, Melbourne Theatre Company and Sydney Opera House

Writer: Debbie Tucker Green
Director: Leticia Caceres
Set & Costume Designer: Tanja Beer
Lighting Designer: David Walters

Photography:Sebastian Bourges

INFO:
Random is an urgent, hard hitting drama about a day in the life of an ordinary family who are forced to face the sudden, shattering loss of their young brother and son. One female actor transforms into brother to sister, mother to father through a constant flow of poetic prose, propelling us through the aftermath of inexplicable violence. The set design consisted of ready-made elements of backstage theatre – a series of diverse lighting truss to create an abstract urban cityscape.

"In a word, superb."
Real Time Magazine

"This was such a perfect production for me that I booked tickets to go again the following day".
Ourbrisbane.com

"Leticia Cacares' direction keeps the action shiftless, edgy, fuelled by anxious energy. In a simple but effective stage design, Newman appears under metal scaffolding suspended at jagged angles, complementing Green's fragmentary poetry and evoking the urban jungle from which it springs. Random is heart-wrenching theatre, and a compelling performance from an actor with a very bright future.
Cameronwoodhead.com

"Letitcia Caceres's stripped down production wisely goes for simplicity: Tanja Beer's abstract set, constructed of girders, subtly sketches in an urban feel while focusing everything on the performer. All four characters are played by Zahra Newman, whose unsentimental, restrained performance creates a moving portrayal of a family at the point of devastation. Newman alone is worth the price of the ticket, for the sheer pleasure of seeing a highly skilled actor at the top of her form". "..The most wholly satisfying theatre I've seen at the MTC this year."
Alison Croggon
