Theatrical storytelling doesn't need to cost the earth

The world is entering a new age of environmental awareness. It is imperative that we demonstrate to our community that we can create exciting artistic projects and ideas with minimal effect on the environment. I am currently investigating sustainable solutions for theatrical design to support the emerging ethic of 'ecological design' in the Performing Arts.

Just as an experienced stage designer generally designs with budget limitations in mind, I have also begun incorporating an environmentally responsible approach to the way in which I create work. This begins early in the design process, and is integrated into every aspect of the procedure; from the development of conceptual ideas, to the realisation of the design concept, to the manner in which the finished product is disposed of. As part of this development, there are in-depth discussions with the director, production manager and artistic team about how a sustainable design is to be achieved. Please see One is Warm in Winter and the Other Has a Better View to observe how this is implemented in a realised design project.

Challenges that are currently facing the theatre industry in terms of sustainability:

  • The temporary nature of the theatre design is in itself a challenge when approaching the notion of sustainability.

  • Lack of knowledge on the subject of sustainable theatre and insufficient education on the topic.

  • "Fear" of sustainable practice stifling the artistic process & outcome.

  • Lack of awareness about eco-industrial design principles and life-cycle importance.

  • Wasteful traditional theatre practices that urgently need to be updated - from the company's organisation to the workshops building the sets.

  • Insufficient organisation of the design process - designers and production managers need to take more responsibility for how designs are to be made and disposed of. This, in turn, needs to be incorporated into the company's broader environmental practices.

  • Lack of support for designers to pursue an ecological arts practice. We need to encourage awareness, knowledge, support and publicity for green design within the theatre community to promote the necessary changes.

Watch this space for future projects related to the creation of green theatre!
